Symbol

2009 Comedy 01h33

A man wakes up and mysteriously finds himself trapped in an empty, white rectangular room, wearing clownish bright yellow polka dot pajamas. Where is he? Who did this to him? How did he end up here? Will he manage to make him escape to safety? Meanwhile, in a Mexican dusty town, a green-masked wrestler known as Escargot man prepares for an important match. As the nameless prisoner appears closer to escape and Escargot man steps into the ring, filmmaker Matsumoto amplifies the baffling yet suspenseful atmosphere to a crescendo of ridiculous excess.

The DVD set contains three masterpieces by Hitoshi Matsumoto: Symbol, Big man Japan and Saya Zamurai.

In Big Man Japan, Matsumoto portrays the descendant of an illustrious Japanese family, a fallen and pathetic hero who leads an ordinary and lonely life but who must now protect Japan from the giant monsters who assail it.

In Saya Zamurai, a samurai without a saber repudiated by all and wandering miserably on the roads with his daughter falls into the hands of a lord with eccentric desires. To keep his own life safe, he has to take up a final challenge: to make the sad young prince smile again.
